Brussels Car Free Sunday - 19 September, 2010

On Sunday 19 September 2010, Brussels organizes its traditional Car Free Sunday. From 9 am till 7 pm, car traffic is not allowed in the Brussels Region, including the City of Brussels. Only urgent services, vehicles of public interest and persons with a pass can circulate in the zones where car traffic is forbidden.

The 19 municipalities of the Brussels Capital Region will close their territory for car traffic on Sunday 19 September 2010. The Car Free Sunday is part of the European Week of Mobility (16 to 22 September 2010). During this day lots of activities about mobility will be proposed to the Brusselses.

The ring of Brussels will be open to traffic. Only the exits to reach the territory of the Region will be closed.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has retained power when the last two independent legislators made kingmakers by deadlocked elections ended a tense 17-day standoff and agreed to join the Labor government.

Gillard managed to persuade sufficient independent lawmakers to support her center-left Labor Party to form the first minority government in the House of Representatives in 67 years.
Australia’s first female prime minister promised the government will be stable over the next three years, although the defection of a single lawmaker would bring down her administration. While Labor expels lawmakers for failing to vote along party lines, Gillard must get three disparate independent lawmakers plus one from the Greens party to support her legislative agenda.

That agenda includes imposing a new 30 percent tax on iron ore and coal miners’ profits, which are burgeoning with the voracious demand for raw materials from Chinese and Indian manufacturers, and making Australia’s biggest polluters pay for carbon gas emissions. Her newfound supporters have their own agendas. The Greens want gays to be allowed to marry and Australian troops withdrawn from Afghanistan while independent Andrew Wilkie wants federal action to protect problem gamblers from poker machines.

Gillard has rejected legal recognition of gay marriage, but has agreed to allow a parliamentary debate on the future of Australia’s deployment of 1,550 troops in Afghanistan. She has agreed to take legal advice on what federal powers the government has over the availability of poker machines, which are regulated by state legislation.

“No one should underestimate the problems Julia Gillard’s got,’’ said Australian National University political scientist Norman Abjorensen. “She’s got to satisfy people on the left and right of Labor and it’s a very uneasy coalition of interests to keep in check on every available issue,’’ Abjorensen said.

Nick Economou, a Monash University political scientist, said Abbott, who rules out ever making polluters pay for their carbon emissions, could not deal with the Greens, who support charging polluters. The Greens won 12 of the 76 seats in the Senate, where neither Gillard nor Abbott command a majority. “If Tony had become prime minister, he would have quickly run into serious trouble with the Senate’’ which would have resulted in an early election, Economou said.
In return for the Greens’ support, Gillard has agreed to a range of their demands, including establishing a committee to investigate how Australia could introduce a price for carbon gas pollution.

Gillard has also agreed to give up some of a prime minister’s traditional tactical advantages for the independents’ support. While prime ministers have the freedom to call elections at times that suit their interests, Gillard has agreed to confer with allies before setting an election date.

A Federal Election has been announced in Australia for Saturday 21 August 2010.

The Australian Embassy in Brussels will be conducting early voting from Monday 9 August until midday on Saturday, 21 August 2010 (except on weekends and the public holiday on Monday, 16 August) between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm. By voting early queues and delays may be avoided.

Alternatively, voters can apply for a postal vote by going to http://www.aec.gov.au/and printing off and completing an “Application for a postal vote” form. Postal vote applications are also available from the Embassy. Ballot papers will then be sent to voters to complete and post back. The Embassy will accept postal vote applications until midday, Thursday, 19 August 2010. Postal Votes to be considered in the vote count must arrive at the Embassy by midday, Saturday, 21 August or be postmarked before polling day. If a voter opts for a postal vote, applications should be made as soon as possible to give the Embassy sufficient time to get ballot papers to the voter.

Polly Waffle to be axed!

Aussies all over the world were devastated this week by the news that the good old Polly Waffle was to be axed by Nestlé due to declining sales.

There were some mixed feelings from Aussies, some frustrated at the decision because they feel Nestlé didn't market Polly Waffles well so they were hard to find, others said they hadn't even heard of Polly Waffles and would prefer a KitKat!.

Whatever your thoughts on the Polly Waffle most would agree that it's sad to see the end of an iconic uniquely Australian product after 62 great years. Farewell Polly Waffle we will miss you!

I just moved back to Belgium after a long stint in Australia. Whilst there I fell in love with the footy. With the Grand Final coming up I asked my local irish pub if they could show the match this saturday. Happily they agreed! All they would like now is abit more advertisment so it can be a fun time and loads of aussies in Belgium can watch the game.I hope you can do something for us.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights off for one whole hour. Only a year later and this event had become a global sustainability movement with up to 100 million people across 35 countries participating.

Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

In 2009, at 8.30pm on March 28, we are asking people across the world to turn off their lights and join together in creating the vital conversation about the future of our precious planet.

Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of action. Everyone can make a difference. It’s as simple as a flick of the switch. Join us for Earth Hour 2009.

WWF-Belgium takes part this year for the first time and request consequently in all the inhabitants, all the companies and all the authorities of Belgium, to extinguish the lights on March 28. The first contacts in this direction are already very positive.

Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing the planet, and demands urgent global action. Unless we prevent average global temperatures rising more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, we face a high risk of severe and irreversible changes in the planet's natural systems, which will be devastating for people and nature.The public authorities, the companies and the citizens who want to take part can be registered on earthhour.org. As you are aware Australia has had the worst bushfires in a century with the tragic loss of 181 lives. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has called it ‘mass murder’ and here in the UK the Queen and Prime Minister Gordon Brown have both issued statements of condolence:

In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace the Queen said: "I was shocked and saddened to learn of the terrible toll being exacted by the fires this weekend. I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of all those who have died and my deep sympathy to the many who have lost their homes in this disaster on so dreadful an occasion as this for Australia.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown phoned Kevin Rudd on Sunday to offer his condolences and to ‘provide any assistance that the Australian government wanted’.

At Hoogenboom Dive Education we offer 'Discover Scuba Diving'. This small course is an introduction to Scuba Diving.

We start with a little theory part in which we explain what you can do under water and what not to do. After that we go in to our pool for an actual dive and you will feel like an astronaut in space.

If it is something the people like we can use the pool session for the certification course but that is for later.

B&B is conducting, on behalf of the King Baudouin Foundation and the Centre for equal opportunities and opposition to racism, a study with a view to gaining a better understanding of the career path of economic migrants living in Belgium for professional reasons.

To that end, we wish to interview, via a private, anonymous interview lasting one and a half hours, a certain number of citizens who have chosen Belgium as a country of immigration for professional or economic reasons. The interviewees must have arrived in Belgium after 2003!

We are interested in two types of profiles:

- Workers from non-European Union countries in senior positions of responsibility (company managers, etc.) or in very highly specialised positions (academic, specialised technicians, etc.).

- Workers from the 10 new European Union Member States working in a sector where there is shortage of workers (nurses, technicians, chefs, manual workers, engineers, teachers, chemists, insurance employees, heating engineers, etc.)

We are interested in people living in Flanders, Wallonia or Brussels.

The interview is confidential and will be conducted in Antwerp, Brussels or Liège at your convenience. The content of this interview will be essential for understanding your career path, experience and future projects. Your personal details will not be transmitted with the final report.

You will be paid between 80 and 90 euros for your participation depending on the time you can spare for the interview.

October 11 is the day before the 91st anniversary of the disastrous Battle of Passchendaele on October 12, 1917. Separate Australian and New Zealand Passchendaele tours including Tyne Cot will be arranged for anyone wishing to do these.

The Musicians

Heather Charlton and Wendy Quinlan are both professional musicians. They performed together on ANZAC Day this year for an invited audience of 400 at the official opening of the "Brave Little Belgium" exhibition at the Memorial Museum Passchendaele. Wendy also performed at the ANZAC 90th Passchendaele Commemorative Service at Tyne Cot last year.

Heather Charlton (piano, New Zealand) graduated in Auckland with an honours degree in piano studies and musicology, and won a scholarship to study the harpsichord and baroque chamber music at the Royal Music Conservatorium of The Hague. A scholarship from the Belgian Ministry of Arts and Culture followed, enabling further studies in baroque music at the Royal Music Conservatorium in Brussels (harpsichord) and the Royal Music Conservatorium of Antwerp (organ). Heather teaches the harpsichord and keyboard accompaniment at the Flemish Music Academy of Schaarbeek, Brussels.

Wendy Quinlan (flute, Australia) studied in Canberra and Switzerland. She has been principal flute for the Australian and World Youth Orchestras, Basel Sinfonietta, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra do Porto and the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders. As a soloist she has appeared with a number of ensembles, and has made several recordings. She is based in Brussels and in 2007 played at the ANZAC Commemorative Service at Tyne Cot. Her website is

Guided Walks
Cultural / Historical Walk: Steven Reynaert is an historian and cultural officer who works for the town of Messines. This walk focuses on the rich history of the town from medieval times to the present day.

Battlefield Walk: This will be led by Martin O'Connor who helped develop the walk together with Dr Chris Pugsley, the New Zealand military historian, Steven Reynaert, the Messines historian, Patrick Colson of the Messines Museum Committee and Jeff McNeill of Massey University in New Zealand.

The Battle of Messines Ridge
The Battle of Messines Ridge in 1917 was one of the very few successful attacks of the Western Front and began with the detonation of 19 massive mines at 3.10 am on June 7. With the Australians to their right and a British division to their left, the New Zealand Division attacked up the hill and took the town itself. Further round the ridge at Wytschaete, the 16th Irish Division (southern and largely Catholic) and the 36th Ulster Division (northern and largely Protestant) fought side by side for the first and only time.

Messines is twinned with Featherston, home of New Zealand's largest World War One training camp, and is also the place where ANZAC Day is marked by New Zealanders each year. There is a New Zealand Memorial and a New Zealand Memorial to the Missing (840) in the town and last year a plaque commemorating Samuel Frickleton VC was unveiled outside the Church. In recent years there has been renewed Irish interest in the town with the building of an Island of Ireland Peace Park and traditional Celtic tower, along with the Peace Village with its modern chalet-style accommodation, restaurant, bar and meeting rooms.
